The Season of Lent

lentcross
Lent is, among many things, a season of reflection, looking inward, and soul-searching. It’s a season for looking intently toward Jesus, the author of our faith, and longing to know him better. It’s a season of community, when people come together more often than normal and for extra time – such as to share a simple supper or to pray together, or simply to get to know one another better.

Lent at St. Peter’s will find us engaged in many of these aspects of Lent. We will reflect on what it means to be a Christian believer, to join with each other in community, to meditate on how God meets us in our suffering, and to involve ourselves in times of prayer, meditation, and healing.

God calls us through His word to return to Him, to experience his steadfast love, and to worship Him during this special season of hope and preparation for receiving His grace and mercy through the passion and death of his only begotten Son.

“Character Traits of Christian Believers”

In the words of the prophet Joel, God summons his people to “rend their hearts and not their garments.” People of faith have expectations laid upon them, character traits that show forth who we are as God’s baptized children.
Through this series of special messages that begin on
Ash Wednesday and continue each Sunday through March 21, Pastor Carl will address six character traits illustrated by our scripture readings and expected of Christian believers.

Ash Wednesday, February 17: DISCIPLESHIP
First Sunday In Lent, February 21: GRATITUDE
Second Sunday In Lent, February 28: TRUST
Third Sunday In Lent, March 7: PATIENCE
Fourth Sunday In Lent, March 14: PRODIGALITY
Fifth Sunday In Lent, March 21: SACRIFICIAL LOVE

“Where Is God In Suffering?”

On January 12, 2010 a devastating earthquake ravaged the island nation of Haiti. 200,000 people lost their lives and hundreds of thousands were left homeless and with life threatening injuries. Many have searched for answers to the question, “where was God in this devastation?” “Where was God in the midst of the suffering of so many helpless individuals?” The answers to such questions are elusive and seemingly impossible to find. Yet, there are answers, answers that can be found in God’s word. During our Wednesday evening mid-week gatherings, Pastor Carl will address these and other questions through a series of meditations.

Thursday Night Prayers

A TIME OF PRAYER, WORSHIP, AND MUTUAL SUPPORT

7:00 PM gatherings in the Sanctuary

The followers of Jesus approached him with a simple request, “Lord, teach us to pray.” During the past year a number of members have been gathering twice monthly to support one another in their lives, learn how to pray, and pray for the concerns and needs of the members and friends of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. As part of our Lenten discipline a time of prayer, meditation and contemplative worship is being added to our Lenten schedule. Each Thursday evening, beginning on February 25 and continuing through March 25, members and friends will gather in the sanctuary for times of sharing, praying, and worship. The worship experiences will be a combination of healing services with anointing of holy oils, quiet meditative Holy Eucharist, and singing the prayerful Litany. Invitation is open to all who wish to deepen their spiritual and prayer life.

Thursday, February 25: Service of the Word for Healing and Anointing

Thursday, March 4: The Litany

Thursday, March 11: Meditative Holy Communion

Thursday, March 18: The Litany

Thursday, March 25: Service of the Word for Healing and Anointing
